ASAM and AACN Partner to Increase Critical Addiction Training for Nurse Practitioners

AACN is pleased to announce a new opportunity for schools offering primary care NP programs to participate in an exciting federally funded initiative to increase substance use disorder education in NP curricula. AACN recently partnered with the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) on a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) grant called the NP Substance Use Disorder Medical Education (NPSUDMedEd) Project.

The grant aims to provide participating primary care NP graduates with knowledge and skills they need to help reduce the addiction treatment gap through the delivery of nonjudgmental and compassionate care that encourages individuals with SUD to initiate and remain in treatment.

In Year 1 of the NPSUDMedEd project, AACN is recruiting 10 nursing schools offering primary care NP programs (Family, Primary Care Adult/Gerontology, Primary Care Pediatric, or Women's' Health)  to pilot ASAM's SUD curriculum/training modules (a total of 6-8 content hours) with current students during the winter/spring 2020 semester (January- May 2020). Each nursing school will receive $5,000 from ASAM for the year to fund curriculum implementation and associated activities.

Expectations:

• Each selected NP program will be expected to identify one or two lead faculty for this project. 
• The curriculum/learning modules must be initiated in January/February 2020 and completed by May 2020. Students and faculty will be expected to complete a pre- and post-assessment as well as evaluations of the materials. 
• The project lead faculty person at each school must participate in 4 virtual meetings during the project year. 
• Goal is to have the modules/curriculum piloted with approximately 75 NP students at each school. (This number is flexible.)
