Understanding this relationship and its impact on health can inform nursing education and practice to improve service delivery for underserved communities. Caste, “an artificial…fixed and embedded ranking of human value that sets the presumed supremacy of one group against the presumed inferiority of other groups…” (p. 17), consists of 8 pillars that contribute to increased morbidity and mortality among Black Americans and other underserved communities. Click here to read about each pillar, provides a recent exemplar, and discusses its health impact. Diversity is defined as individual attributes that extend beyond race, age, and gender to also include, but are not limited to, characteristics such as national origin, immigrant status, language, color, disability, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, socioeconomic status, veteran status, and family structure. Inclusion is defined as a culture that encourages collaboration, flexibility, and fairness, as well as leverages diversity so that all individuals can participate and contribute to their full potential. An inclusive environment must be created for diversity to flourish. Sustainability occurs when structures and strategies are in place to manage diversity and institutionalize a culture of inclusion. AACN Conducting DEI Member Needs Survey AACN is currently soliciting responses from member schools for our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Member Needs Survey. This survey aims to compile a baseline understanding of DEI awareness, programming, and initiatives for your students, staff, faculty, administrators. We've received a robust response, and look forward to receiving additional feedback. Volunteer Schools Needed: AACN's Culture and Climate Survey Another great way to connect with AACN is to consider volunteering to serve as a pilot school to test a new online platform developed to support our Leading Across Multidimensional Perspectives (LAMP℠) Culture and Climate Survey. This tool gives academic administrators a better understanding of how their learning environment influences student experiences and achievement. With assessment data collected from students, faculty, administrators, and staff, schools are equipped with valuable information needed to initiate change, target areas of growth, and most importantly, improve student outcomes. To test the new platform created for the LAMP℠ survey, AACN is currently seeking schools to be among the first to use this new resource. All types of institutions are encouraged to apply, including small schools, public and private universities, academic health centers, liberal arts schools, and colleges located in rural and urban areas. Schools wishing to participate must complete a brief online form. For more information, please contact AACN’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion staff.
