GNSA Bulletin - March 2022 Edition Tuesday, March 1, 2022 Emerging Leaders Katie Edwards, MSN, RN DNP Program Colorado State University - Pueblo Anticipated Graduation Date: August 2022 Visiting Assistant Professor at Colorado State University - Pueblo School of Nursing I am currently enrolled in the DNP-Population Health program at Colorado State University - Pueblo. I chose this program because, after Labor & Delivery, nursing education in the clinical setting is my passion. I wanted to further my education for the benefit of my nursing students. I have appreciated the Population Health emphasis of my DNP program because it has allowed me to focus on the health of the population of registered nurses. There has been no other time in history when the health and wellness of registered nurses has needed more attention. I am currently in the data collection phase of my DNP project where I hope to learn more about increasing resilience among registered nurses working in the acute care setting. My DNP project seeks to provide mental health and resiliency support to registered nurses through the use of mindfulness tools while working at the hospital. Once I have completed my DNP degree, I will continue to be a passionate advocate for nursing students and registered nurses the world over. Registered Nurses advocate for their patients every day. It is time we support each other and advocate for the nursing profession and the physical, mental, and emotional health of all registered nurses. The health outcomes of our patients depend on our health and ability to serve. Are you our next emerging leader? Do you excel in your graduate program, demonstrate excitement for your nursing work, and/or have potential to greatly contribute to health care? If so, submit an emerging leader nomination form today to self-nominate or nominate a fellow student. The emerging leader will be selected from the applicants and notified when they will be profiled. Help us recognize future nursing leaders! Noteworthy Research: On February 17, 2022, Diverse Issues in Higher Education posted an article titled Meeting the Need: How Nursing Schools Are Addressing the RN Shortage Exacerbated by COVID-19. In the article, the author explores the "twin shortages" of both nurses and nurse faculty and how schools of nursing are looking at creative ways to expand student capacity and meet workforce needs. Various deans and faculty were featured in the article. Join the GNSA! Take advantage of the various benefits that are free to you as a graduate student! Professional Conferences: An Opportunity to Network and Learn As a graduate nursing student, it can be very easy to get lost in just completing your coursework, meeting assignment deadlines, writing your dissertation, or working on your practice project. However, there are other ways for you to develop as a graduate nursing student through the professional development opportunities such as nursing conferences. Conferences provide you with the unique ability to network with graduate students from around the country, meet nursing leaders and experts, explore career opportunities after graduation, and reflect on your degree and possibilities for the future. In 2018 I had the opportunity to attend the GNSA Conference which allowed me to learn from nursing experts and take home important new knowledge that has carried me forward towards the completion of my PhD. I am excited to attend the 2022 GNSA Conference, which will take place on August 4-5, 2022 in Washington, DC. Not only do I look forward to the many sessions focused on furthering my nursing career, but I also look forward to meeting you and hope to see you there.
