AACN Statement on the Executive Order to Close the Department of Education

On March 20, the President signed an Executive Order titled Improving Education Outcomes by Empowering Parents, States, and Communities. This order states that the Secretary of Education “shall, to the maximum extent appropriate and permitted by law, take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure of the Department of Education and return authority over education to the States and local communities while ensuring the effective and uninterrupted delivery of services, programs, and benefits on which Americans rely.”

As the voice of academic nursing, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) is deeply concerned by this Executive Order, especially given how critical higher education is to preparing nursing students to provide high-quality, patient-centered care for all citizens.
